Case Study: Ace Combat - Discord Server

Taking community engagement to new heights

Tag: Community

There is nothing more electric than the Ace Combat series. This venerable, long-running Bandai Namco franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary recently, and the eighth entry, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, was given a surprise reveal at The Game Awards in 2025.

Ace Combat has always had a passionate fan base who love its action-packed gameplay, dramatic anime-style storylines and cinematic orchestral soundtracks, as well as a keen desire to play as a plethora of high-spec, modern-day jet fighters.

With such a dedicated fan base, it made sense to create a designated space for all ‘Aces’, so Bandai Namco called on the expertise of Project N once more.

Speed was key to the set-up of this server; working in collaboration with the team at Bandai Namco, we quickly provided a server structure that took into account everything that would be needed: discussion areas for the new title, as well as the previous entries in the series, a section for fans to find others to buddy up as ‘wingmates’ in co-op games and most importantly, dedicated channels to share beautiful, hi-res screenshots of the most powerful aircraft the games have to offer.

The invite link for the server was due to go live not long after the announcement trailer at The Game Awards 2025, so the server had to be ready to receive an influx of users, excited at the prospect of chatting with others about the new game. The onboarding process began as a replica of previous Bandai Namco servers created, but with tweaks and updates to ensure total robustness with users joining.

Some new functionality added into the server was focused on additional security, in particular eliminating the number of rogue spam bots and users that normally make their way into Discord servers. A simple solution, effectively a ‘honey trap’ for these bots was instantly successful and continues to catch out spam when large groups of users join the server.

There were many opportunities to fill the custom emojis with references to all the games in the long-running series; we provided artworking/edits to many of the icons and squadron badges that made their way onto the server, as well as the official franchise mascot ‘Nugget’.

Additionally, as a real shout-out to long-time fans of the series, we produced stickers and emojis for the famous ‘JPEG Dog’ from Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, ensuring that the wholesome backstory behind Toraji the golden retriever continues to live on in the official Discord server!

The Ace Combat Official Discord server grew fast, with around 6,000 new users after a month of launching, and was hitting the Discord Discovery page within two months of opening up. This ensured a measured increase month on month - as of September 2026, the server sits at 15,000+ members, keen for the imminent launch of the new game.
