Case Study: Green Man Gaming - Discord Server Support

Blowing the cobwebs of a 30k+ member server

Tag: Community

Project N has a deep and long-running understanding of Discord as a platform, and sharing that knowledge is one of the greatest gifts we can offer our clients.

Sometimes, the creation, set up and maintenance of a Discord server isn’t outright required and instead applying our best practices for servers is the ‘blowing off the cobwebs’ that is needed from a server to pick up its activity and engagement again, which is exactly what we did for the collaborative project with Green Man Gaming.

Green Man Gaming is a stalwart presence in the UK games industry, so we were proud to offer up our support by diving into updating their official Discord server.

The server itself primarily served as a hub for just over 30,000 gamers discussing games, taking part in competitions, and providing them a way to be conveniently closer to customer support.

Our work began with a front end and back end audit of the server, looking at user experiences, such as onboarding as a new user, considering questions like ‘How simple is the process?’, ‘How concise are the server rules?’, ‘Is it obvious where to go and chat once you’re in?’

We implemented a totally new onboarding process for the server, providing users the opportunity to choose what content they want to see on the server, e.g. general gaming chat, deals, competitions, etc. via roles assigned to their profile. Roles also provided Green Man Gaming with a simple solution to ping every user directly with notifications when big discounts or sales were taking place in the store.

The server rules were rewritten to be clearer, leaving no risk of users interpreting them as they see fit, so they provide the most robust safety measures for Green Man Gaming.

We assessed and reorganised the channels and overall structure of the server, removing unrequired channels that had no activity. This immediately led to the server appearing more active, as any dead channels no longer existed, focusing conversation on those that remained.

This was then built upon by looking at activities in the server, considering what had been done before, what worked, what didn’t and then providing initial plans to the client for how to run some of these activities in the future.

Finally, we took inspiration from Green Man Gaming’s resident mascot Alf and created a suite of fun animated reactionary emojis that were broad enough in appeal to be used in general conversation on the server, rather than specifically about games. Additionally, any users that had Discord Nitro would be able to post Alf in any other Discord server, providing some useful additional exposure for Green Man Gaming across the Discord infrastructure.

The work took around 3 months and once all of these elements were completed, we were able to hand the keys back to Green Man Gaming with a fully refreshed, updated, wholly more secure Discord server for them to manage.
