G2 lift the LEC Spring Split 2022 trophy

There are few names that carry as much weight in the world of esports as Riot Games.

The multiplayer battle arena phenomenon, League of Legends, has spawned its own esports league, split across the territories of the Americas, Asia, and Europe, which has become a thriving industry in its own right.

Our team was tasked with creating regular editorial content for the Riot Games’ highest caliber and biggest professional league in Europe – the League of Legends European Championship (LEC). This included written pieces digging into the events of the weekend's matches including match reports, interviews, player guides, season recaps, and in-depth features exploring the journeys of teams and players throughout the season's multiple competitions.

Match reports, interviews, player guides, season recaps, and in-depth features exploring the journeys of teams and players throughout the season's multiple competitions.

Our main focus for this project was to create high-quality editorial content that matched the prestige of the league, and that would drive fans towards Riot's own live tournament watch platforms. We succeeded in this goal, adding value for the thousands of viewers who would tune into the matches weekly to watch their favorite teams compete. We did this by helping to build the narratives and expand on the stories that emerged from each season, as exemplified in this long read that charts the unexpected rise of the underdog team FC Schalke 04 in the 2020 season.

As well as finding out what makes players tick, we also got the chance to chat with many of the casters who tell the stories of the LEC live on air. In order to produce coverage that matched the level of knowledge and enthusiasm of the on-air hosts, our writers immersed themselves in the world of League of Legends, consuming hours of matches, reading fan message boards, and following many players and commentators on Twitter!
